Historic Little Fork Episcopal Church Hosts Culpeper Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR)
On Wednesday, 12 June approximately twenty representatives from the Culpeper Chapter of the DAR visited the Historic Little Fork Church. As the only remaining Colonial Church in the County of Culpeper, and possibly the last Virginia Church funded with tax levies authorized by the English Crown as the official Church of England, our Colonial Church community played a role in the American Revolution through affiliation with the Culpeper Minute Men. The Culpeper Minute Men, 350 volunteers from the region were organized under Patrick Henry, Commander First Virginia Continental Regiment. They fought at Great Bridge, in 1775 , the first conflict of the Revolution on Virginia soil. Their “Don’t Tread on Me” flag is considered to be the first battle flag of the American Revolution.
The Little Fork Church presenters were Don Stockton, who spoke of the Little Fork Church patrons who were associated with the Culpeper Minute Men; Bob Lee, who detailed the early Little Fork Church history and the Church restoration in the 1970s; and Kathy Ellis, who spoke to the early Church connection to the German (Germanna) immigrant families in the region who also played a role in both Revolution and the early Little Fork Church community.
